Jengus Ercil knocked down seven three-pointers and scored 27 points to help Cate hold off host Laguna Blanca, 59-55, in a non-league boys basketball game on Wednesday night at Merovick Gym.

Cate built a a 52-40 lead with six minutes to go before Laguna Blanca made a run to make it close.

“In the end, it was too much Jengus Ercil,” said Laguna Blanca coach Phil Sherman.

Cate got 18 points from Marcus Scudder and Tyler Martinez had 11 points and “did a fantastic job of disrupting (Laguna Blanca’s) offense,” said Cate coach Andy Gil.

He added that Scudder’s defensive effort held Laguna Blanca guard Charlie Sheldon scoreless in the second half. Sheldon hit five three-pointers in the first half and scored 15 points

Carson Stewart scored 20 points to lead the Owls and Michael Chang had 15 points.

Gil praised the defensive work of freshman Josh Butler, Peter Lehman, Marley Joseph and Will Vanica.

Cate (6-3) is on winter break for the rest of the year.

“We look forward to having a full healthy roster come January. Tonight we had five guys out due to sickness or injury,” said Gil.
