An early Sunday morning fire damaged part of a huge greenhouse used for growing cannabis in Carpinteria.
A neighbor who awoke to a glow notified the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District about the incident on the 4900 block of Foothill Road at approximately 5:20 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a big greenhouse with heavy smoke and fire exiting through a large portion of the roof, according to Fire Department spokeswoman Grace Rampton.
Crews kept the fire contained to one area of the large greenhouse, and had knocked down the blaze by 6:26 a.m., Rampton said.
The incident generated a huge amount of smoke and fire that could be seen as far away as Linden Avenue.
“Greenhouses are always a challenge because of the construction, and the plasticized material creates a large amount of heat and smoke,” Fire Marshal/Investigator Michael Lomonaco said.
Firefighters also were challenged by the remote location with narrow access roads, Lomonaco said.
The blaze was confined to approximately 10,000 square feet of the 140,000-square-foot greenhouse used for growing cannabis, Lomonaco added.
Personnel from the Montecito, Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara City and Ventura County fire departments helped out on the incident.
Deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and an American Medical Response ambulance crew also assisted at the scene.
No one was injured due to the fire, Carpinteria-Fire representatives said.
The cause of the blaze remained under investigation on Sunday afternoon.
A red tag has been placed on the greenhouse for safety reasons until building officials can complete their assessment of the structure, Lomonaco added.
