The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is a nationwide honor recognizing the compassion and clinical excellence that define the nursing profession. It was founded in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from an autoimmune disease, as a tribute to the nurses who cared for him with remarkable kindness. DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

These Cottage nurses received DAISY Awards based on nominations written by patients, family members and colleagues.

A colleague wrote, “I’m constantly impressed by Victoria. She’s one of the smartest and safest nurses I’ve ever observed.”

On one busy night when a patient was feeling anxious during their care, Victoria dedicated her time and empathy to the patient, engaging them in conversation to help calm them. Her colleague observed the grace and compassion of their interaction.

“These are the moments that I believe leave a lasting impact on patients. This is why I became a nurse – not just to help people, but to learn from patients and coworkers. I’ll always be grateful for my shifts with Victoria, as she teaches me invaluable lessons as a nurse, mother and friend.”

Jaida Dinius, Mother Infant Unit, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital

A patient nominated Jaida for providing the kind of extraordinary care that stays with a family.

“My first night as a new mom was one of the hardest of my life, and I can say without hesitation that I would not have made it through without Jaida,” the patient wrote.

Exhausted and in pain, the patient felt determined to breastfeed despite significant challenges. Jaida explained what her body needed to heal and reassured her.

“In a moment where she could tell I was nearing a breaking point, Jaida gently said, ‘I know how hard you’re working. We’ll do this together.’”

“Nine months later, Jaida’s words still echo in my mind during long nights and tough moments,” the patient wrote. “Her support changed my experience and made a lasting impression on my life.”

When a patient arrived for a routine biopsy, Criss noted unusual symptoms and requested a triage assessment. The evaluation led to a CT scan and MRI that confirmed a tumor.

“Thanks to Criss’ action, my spouse received timely treatment and targeted therapy,” the family member wrote. ” Criss’ vigilance gave my spouse a second chance at life. Please extend our heartfelt thanks and recognize her as the silent hero she is.”
