A fire in a chemical waste storage container prompted the evacuation of a building at UCSB on Monday, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 11 a.m. to the incident at Elings Hall near the eastern entrance to the university campus, according to fire Capt. Scott Safechuck.

The fire resulted in an alarm sounding and fire sprinklers being activated, Safechuck said.

About 70 people evacuated the building, and no injuries were reported.

Crews from the city of Santa Barbara assisted on the incident, along with haz-mat teams, Safechuck said.

Firefighters in protective clothing entered the building to investigate.

At about 5:20 p.m., tThe incident is determined to be stabilized and will be turned over to UCSB for cleanup,” Safechuck said.

Cause of the fire remained under investigation.
