Chris Powers was honored for teaching and coaching floorball with the Special Olympics.

Chris Powers was presented the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month Award on Monday, but this honor was about his work as a coach.

Powers, who has competed in bocce, basketball, softball, soccer, track & field, swimming and volleyball, has transitioned into coaching, said Jaime Artiaga of Special Olympics of Santa Barbara at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon.

“The award is being presented to him for his contributions to train athletes in floorball, which is a new sport here in the community,” said Artiaga.

Floorball is similar to floor hockey. The sport has rules that promote a more safe, less aggressive style play.

“He’s done an excellent job,” said Artiaga of Power’s coaching. “He is very patient, very kind. I’m proud of his ability to assist others in learning this sport.”
