Dos Pueblos baseball secured a spot in the CIF-SS D3 Quarterfinals with a 10-7 second-round win over Edison High on Tuesday in Huntington Beach.
The Chargers will return home and play host to Mira Costa in the Quarterfinals on Friday at 3:15 p.m.
Dos Pueblos’ Matti Di Maggio got things started with a homer in the first at-bat of the game, and Stone Saunders roped an RBI single to make it 2-0 after the top of the first.
However, Edison responded with three runs in the bottom half to take its first lead of the day at 3-2.
After a scoreless second, the Chargers evened the score in the third before erupting for six runs in the top of the fourth to expand their lead out to 9-3.
Edison attempted to chip away down the stretch but Dos Pueblos held on for the three-run win.
Di Maggio ended the day at 3-for-5, as did Marcus Carbajal, who also drove in a trio of runs. Saunders went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Nick Salcido tallied two RBI and Taylor Young scored three times.
Liam Shea picked up the win on the mound, while Max Cruse and Salcido were solid in relief to finish off the round-two victory.
Carpinteria High 7, New Roads 2 (Div. 7)
The Warriors upset top-seeded New Roads in the second round of the CIF-SS D7 playoffs on Tuesday in front of a strong crowd at John Calderwood Field in Carpinteria.
Carpinteria will now be on the road against North Torrance for the Quarterfinals on Friday at 3:15 p.m.
“It was a big deal for our kids to feel the support of the community at John Calderwood Field today,” Carpinteria High head coach Pat Cooney said. “Little leaguers, Grandpas, CHS football players, uncles, sisters and friends filled the yard with baseball noise. Our players fed off the positive energy and played their best game.
“We look forward to facing our toughest opponent yet in North Torrance HS on Friday. No matter what happens, our group will give it their best shot and nobody can ever take away today’s Round 2 win over the number one seed.”
The Warriors scored all of their runs in the early stages, opening the game with four runs in the first and following with three more in the second to build up an early lead.
While the offense provided some cushion, Dallas Bartholic and Gabe Martinez combined on the mound to keep the New Roads offense at bay. Martinez fired four shutout innings of relief, striking out five along the way.
Offensively, Martinez drove in a pair of runs while Brick Trumble and Brayden Real tallied one RBI apiece. Bartholic and Micah Smith each scored twice for Carpinteria.
