San Marcos girls lacrosse came up just short in a season-ending 8-7 loss to El Segundo in the second round of the CIF-SS Div. 2 playoffs on Thursday in El Segundo.
“We had another banner season and these girls put their heart and soul into it every day, so I can’t express how proud I feel despite the tough loss,” San Marcos head coach Paul Ramsey said.
It was a low-scoring battle in the early stages, as the two sides were knotted at 1-1 after one quarter of play and El Segundo held a slim 3-2 lead heading into halftime.
The game continued to see-saw back and forth in the third as it was tied at 5-5 with one quarter to play. El Segundo then pulled out the scrappy win by outscoring San Marcos 3-2 in the fourth.
Victoria Aldana was in the middle of the offense all night for the Royals with two goals and four assists, while Rylie Cook scored twice and Josephine Grossman, Lyle Dessouky and Mia Richmond all scored once. Carly Grant tallied five saves in the cage.
San Marcos ends the season with an overall record of 16-4 in a year that featured a third straight Channel League championship.
Santiago 15, Dos Pueblos 2 (Div. 3)
The Chargers also had their season come to a close on Thursday, falling to top-seeded Santiago on the road.
Dos Pueblos struggled to find a rhythm on the offensive end, while Santiago kept its foot on the gas on the offensive end of the field.
Linnea Clapinski and Lily Olivera each scored twice for the Chargers, while Stella Lawler racked up 15 saves in the goal.
“The final score does not represent the effort and drive our team showed today,” Dos Pueblos head coach Dan Feldhaus said. “We faced a tough team and the Chargers battled to the final whistle. I am very proud of this team. I’m very appreciative of our seniors who left it all on the field today.”
Great Oak 6, Cate 5 (Div. 3)
The Rams ended their season with a tight loss to Great Oak on Thursday.
Cate and Great Oak battled through the defensive struggle from start to finish, but it was Great Oak who ultimately outlasted the Rams and pulled out the win.
“I can not imagine a team without this group of seniors- Carmen, Lauren, Maia, Lorelei, Harper, Claire, Serena, Sofi, and Jasper,” Cate head coach Renee Mack said. “They have been the backbone of the program for the past four years.
“Thank you to the parents who made the trip out to watch. We really appreciate all your support. This was a memorable season. I am incredibly proud of how the team played.”
Maia Holmes recorded a hat trick for the Cate offense, while Carmen Lack and Belu Salvado netted one goal apiece. Chelsea Newlove ended the night with eight saves.
