San Marcos baseball fell behind early and couldn’t recover, dropping their CIF-SS Div. 2 playoff opener to Palos Verdes by a score of 8-3 on the road on Thursday.
The Sea Kings scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to an early lead that they never let go of from there.
They also tacked on four runs in the fourth inning while the Royals remained scoreless until the sixth.
In that sixth inning, San Marcos scored all three of their runs thanks to an RBI single by Kieran Babai and a two-run triple off the bat of Steven Bradley.
Mason Crang led the Royals’ offense as the lone player to tally two hits. Crang, Babai and Patrick Foster scored the three San Marcos runs.
The Royals’ season comes to a close with an overall record of 14-13-1 after finishing in second place in the Channel League.
Camarillo 9, Dos Pueblos 0 (CIF-SS Div. 4)
The Chargers also fell in their playoff opener to top-seeded Camarillo on Thursday.
The Scorpions scored five of their nine runs in the fourth inning to capture the game’s momentum. From there, they never looked back and cruised to the win.
Jesse Di Maggio, Aden Blaney and Charlie Potter all tallied hits for Dos Pueblos in the loss.
The Chargers end the year with an overall record of 15-13-1 and a fifth-place finish in the Channel League.
Colony 13, Carpinteria 0 (CIF-SS Div. 6)
The Warriors dropped their first-round game against No. 2 seed Colony on Thursday.
Shane Goodmanson held a potent Colony offensive attack down for the first three innings, but they broke through in the fourth.
“The good fortune we were having in the first three innings suddenly evaporated,” Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney said. “Goodmanson would work into good counts but hits found holes in the infield or open grass in the spacious outfield.”
Meanwhile, the only Warrior hits came off the bats of Aiden Alcaraz, Talon Trumble and Beto Martinez.
“There are reasons that Colony is highly ranked: they pitch well, they are tenacious at the plate and they play catch. They will make a deep run in Division 6,” Cooney said. “We had a good baseball day. The players represented their team and school with pride, and every one of the 21 players on the roster got into the game today.
“We believe that each of [the seniors] will look back at the whole experience of playing baseball as a positive in their lives.”
Acad. of Careers & Explorations 9, Cate 0 (CIF-SS Div. 8)
The Rams had their season come to a close in the opening round of the playoffs as well
Peter Lehman got the start for Cate, allowing four earned runs and striking out six in six innings of work.
Offensively, Barron Crayton roped a double and Noah Casbarro tallied a single.
“We hung there and played well against a very good team,” Rams coach David Soto said. “We lost to a better team; the playoffs are always fickle and we ran into a great ball club.
“Despite the loss, we are so proud of what this team accomplished this season. We have a young squad that improved a ton. Next season is a long way away but we can’t wait for that day when it gets here. Thanks to our lone senior Susie Diaz!”
