Kellan Cotter posted the fastest time in the 400 meters and broke a 40-year-old Dos Pueblos record at the CIF-SS Division 2 Track & Field Prelims at Ontario High on Saturday.

Cotter ran 47.74 to place first overall and lead all DP qualifiers. He also finished eighth in the 200 to qualify for the Division 2 Finals next Saturday at Moorpark High.

DP’s distance runners booked their spots in the finals. The senior trio of Ashton Smedley, Cullen Gully, and Owen Abbott move on in the 1600 and Phi Contakes advances after finishing ninth in the 3200.

The boys 4×800 relay team finished in second to qualify for the finals. The team consisted of seniors Smedley, Oliver Saleh, Abbott, and Gully.

For the DP girls, Hazel Burgess placed eighth in the 200 and Alix Hollingsworth finished seventh in discus to make the finals.

The girls 4×100 relay ran 48.66 to break a 15-year-old school record but didn’t advance. The team members were Tabitha Weller, Burgess, Ruby Streatfeild and Lucia Riley.

Logan Patterson Deakyne won his heat in the 300 hurdles in Ontario to advance to next week’s Division 2 Finals.

“Logan is a great competitor but he is better human,” said coach Marilyn Hantgin. “He makes a point to shake everyone’s hand in his race after they run. I love this about Logan. He has a big heart.”

Dalton Shupe qualified in the pole vault with a mark of 13-3.

The Royals’ girls 4 x 800 relay qualified with a sixth-place finish overall. The team of Elsie Tuttle, Layla Llewellyn, Sofi Hernandez and Maya D’Amour “exceeded expectations and made it on to next week. They ran a 9 second personal best,” said Hantgin.

Four Dons qualified in seven events for next week’s CIF Finals in Moorpark.

Malachi Johnston led all qualifiers in the shot put at 54-7 and is the 6th seed in the discus at 139-0.

“Malachi has shown that he can perform on any stage. It’s such a luxury to coach a guy who’s so dependable,” said Dons coach Olivia Perdices.

Jarrod Shalhoob Conaway took one jump at 6-2 to tie his lifetime best and lead all qualifiers in the high jump.

“Absolutely clutch for him to wait through 38 other guys jumping at two heights then getting it done in one attempt. I’m excited to see what he can do next week,” said Perdices.

Elina Stump qualified for the finals as the second seed in the triple jump at 36-10.5, won her heat and is the fourth seed in the 100 hurdles at 14.71 and is the seventh seed in the long jump at 17-6.5.

“Really solid day from her. She did a great job of tuning out the distractions and getting to the finals for the second time in all three events,” said Perdices.

Shea Gannon qualified as the seventh seed in the triple jump at 35-4.

“Making the finals as a rookie in an event as technical as triple jump is impressive. It says a lot about how athletic she is and how well she takes coaching,” said Perdices.

”I’m really proud of how they all performed today,” she added. “The field event situations at Ontario aren’t ideal. I’m glad (the student-athletes) were able to make the adjustments they needed to make and move on to the finals.”
