Community members are invited to Alpha Resource Center’s first virtual Circle of Life fundraiser, 4 p.m. Sunday, March 21; and SlingShot Art Program Pop Up Art Sale, which opens at 8 am. Monday, March 15.
In past years, the Circle of Life fundraiser has been a midweek luncheon. However, due to the Montecito mudslide in 2018, and the current COVID-19 pandemic, Alpha as only been able to hold this event once in the last three years.
Even in the midst of the pandemic, though, Alpha has kept its mission moving forward. Its children, family and advocacy team supported more than 1,000 individuals and families over the past year. That support has ranged from assistance securing school-based services to deliveries of diapers, food and masks.
Alpha adjusted its Cathedral Oaks day program to create safe opportunities for the adults it serves. Instead of gathering on campus each day, participants are picked up at their homes for one-on-one community outings.
At Slingshot, Alpha’s art studio and gallery, art supply drop-offs and staff support at the homes of artists have provided a way to continue to foster belonging.
“There’s still more work to be done,” said Jeff Henson, director of development. “Our current and future Alpha participants have even bigger plans for their futures. They’re dreaming of working in a restaurant, performing on a stage in front of a packed house, seeing their artwork featured in a gallery show, and so much more.
“And we are listening to their voices. That’s why, in response, we’re working to create and expand culinary training, supported employment, and other interest-based programs.”
