Geared toward high school students on the Central Coast, the Youth Climate Workshop will bring together young people who are eager to make a positive impact on the planet’s future.

“Nurturing the environmental leaders of tomorrow is a critical part of CEC’s commitment to a sustainable future,” said Sigrid Wright, CEO of CEC.

“This is an opportunity for high schoolers to gather with climate experts, to discuss and learn about climate anxiety, policy advocacy, everyday earth-friendly actions, and how to communicate about climate change with their friends, family, neighbors and teachers,” Wright said.

Led by CEC staff members Kathi King, Rosheil Ramirez, and Farah Stack; environmental consultant Ilan Macadam-Somer; and educators Velia Soto and Jessica Prichard, participants will learn about key climate-related topics.

Workshop topics include climate anxiety education, climate communication skills, climate policy advocacy tools and consumer habit changes for the planet.

In addition to making connections with other local youth who care about climate change, students will receive an official certificate of completion and community service hours for participating in the workshop.

This first-of-its-kind pilot for youth is an adaptation of CEC’s Climate Stewards Certification Program, which cultivates and trains a corps of volunteers to play an active role in their community to address and alleviate climate impacts.

Outcomes from the workshop will inform how CEC moves forward with its larger youth initiative in 2024.
