Those towering buildings you can’t help but notice under construction right on the south side of Highway 101 in Goleta are part of a self-storage complex expected to be completed later this year.

The Goleta Self Storage will be home to 1,023 storage units.

“Adjacent to Highway 101 in the Santa Barbara metro area, the Goleta Self Storage project consists of 2.06 acres situated near the campus of University of California, Santa Barbara,” the company’s website states.

“The surrounding area houses an affluent population and several shopping, business and entertainment venues.”

The storage facility, at 10 S. Kellogg Ave., is pinned between the Union Pacific railroad tracks and Highway 101, just west of Highway 217 and the southbound exit ramp for Patterson Avenue. It’s just north of a large working-class neighborhood in Old Town Goleta.

The project contains three buildings, each with three levels above ground and one underground.

The Goleta Planning Commission first approved the Schwan Self-Storage Project Development Plan in 2011. Since then, the ownership has changed and the developer has returned several times for approval on project design changes, including the size and number of storage units.

The Design Review Board considered six design iterations of the project between 2011 and 2020.

The project is expected to open in the fall.
