The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has revealed that the Santa Maria man who collapsed in the Northern Branch Jail and died at a local hospital had suffered a seizure.
Officials previously reported that custody deputies saw the man lose consciousness and fall to the ground from standing height on Aug. 29, the same day he was booked into the facility.
Jail medical staff responded to the housing unit, and the man was transported by American Medical Response to Marian Regional Medical Center.
He died two weeks later, on Sept. 17.
The Coroner’s Bureau investigation determined that the cause of death for Antonio Alvarado Orozco, 40, was “complications of blunt force craniocerebral trauma due to a fall from standing height as a result of a seizure,” spokeswoman Raquel Zick said Thursday.
The death was determined to be accidental.
Investigators conducted an autopsy, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed jail surveillance video that showed the seizure and fall, Zick said.
“The Sheriff’s Office learned that Orozco regained consciousness following his emergency surgery and had begun rehabilitation before his condition declined and he ultimately died,” she said.
Orozco’s fall was on the same day he was booked into the facility on a felony warrant for violation of probation and on suspicion of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury.
Zick said that Wellpath staff at the jail conducted a medical screening on him and did not identify any emergency medical conditions before he was housed at the Northern Branch Jail.
Deaths in custody are reported by the Sheriff’s Office and frequently investigated by the Santa Barbara County Civil Grand Jury.
