Authorities have identified the person who was struck by a train and killed Tuesday afternoon near Santa Barbara.

The incident occurred at about 4:45 p.m. on the tracks near Modoc Road and Hollister Avenue, according to Raquel Zick, public information officer for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The person, who was declared dead at the scene, reportedly was struck by a freight train, but that could not be confirmed.

Personnel from the sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau identified the victim on Wednesday as William George Carmichael, 56, of Santa Barbara, Zick said.

Other train traffic in the area was delayed for a time after the incident.
