Santa Barbara County officials canceled evacuation warnings for the area near Alegria Canyon and Hollister Ranch as containment of the Ridge Fire increased to 75% on Monday.
County Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said the blaze had burned almost 17 acres since starting late Saturday in the remote area west of Gaviota.
Crews had difficulty accessing the fire from the ground because of the remote location on Hollister Ridge. Firefighting aircraft had to wait for the fog to lift before making drops of water and retardant on the blaze.
On Sunday, fire investigators arrested a man suspected of intentionally starting the fire.
Sheriff’s Office arrest logs revealed the suspect as 18-year-old Lompoc man Jose Luis Gomez, who was arrested at Hollister Ranch on suspicion of arson of forest land and forgery.
Gomez is being held on $75,000 bail and is detained at the Main Jail near Santa Barbara, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
