A structure fire in downtown Solvang prompted a second alarm on Thursday night before crews knocked down the flames.

Shortly after 8 p.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to the area of Mission Drive and Fourth Place for a report of a structure fire, according to Karen Cruz-Orduña, a County Fire public information officer.

The fire occurred at a vacant building that had housed now-closed restaurants Sear Steakhouse and Juniper on Fourth, in the 400 block of Fourth Place.

As smoke rose from the structure, firefighters accessed burning areas from multiple levels, including the roof.

Customers and employees at a nearby restaurant, Osteria Grappolo at 1546 Mission Drive, were evacuated as a precaution, but the fire did not spread beyond the original building.

Emergency personnel also accessed the scene from Copenhagen Drive, with some equipment staging on that street.

At 8:20 p.m., crews had knocked down the fire but remained at the scene to conduct a secondary search and handle mop-up operations.

Some resources, including a Lompoc Fire Department engine dispatched as part of the second alarm, were canceled while en route to the incident.

An investigator also was dispatched to the scene to determine how the fire started.
