The District Attorney’s Office charged three juveniles on Friday in connection to the Dec. 9 fatal shooting of a tourist on Santa Barbara’s Stearns Wharf.
Police have said Robert Dion “Rob” Gutierrez, 52, of Camarillo, was walking on the wharf with his wife when he was struck by a gunshot and killed during a fight between two groups.
“One group involved in the altercation has been identified as local Santa Barbara area residents with ties to a local Santa Barbara street gang. The opposing group in the altercation has been identified as Ventura County residents with ties to Ventura County street gangs,” police Lt. Kasi Corbett said Thursday.
District Attorney John Savrnoch’s office said in a statement that two 15-year-olds were charged with murder and the special allegation that they discharged a firearm proximately causing death.
A 16-year-old was charged with accessory after the fact and illegal possession of an unregistered firearm, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Their names are not being disclosed due to their age.
All three juveniles were arrested by Santa Barbara police officers on Thursday in Ventura and Los Angeles county locations, and are being held in custody in Santa Barbara County.
They are scheduled to be arraigned on the criminal charges at the Santa Maria Juvenile Court on Tuesday, Savrnoch’s office said.
Three Santa Barbara men have been charged with murder in this case and a fourth has been charged with accessory to murder.
They’ve had several court appearances, mostly appearing via Zoom from jail custody. At a Friday court hearing, their arraignments were continued to Feb. 27.
