The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office charged a Santa Barbara man with first-degree murder on Tuesday for allegedly killing his mother

Sheriff’s deputies found 72-year-old Lynn Areno of Goleta deceased when they conducted a welfare check Sunday night, spokeswoman Raquel Zick said.

Deputies arrested Christopher Van Vlack, 32, Areno’s son, at the scene on suspicion of homicide.

On Tuesday, the District Attorney’s Office filed a felony charge of first-degree murder with special circumstances of lying in wait and committing the murder deliberately for financial gain.

Van Vlack was in county jail custody as of Tuesday and was being held without bail.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Santa Barbara County Superior Court, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office previously identified Van Vlack as Vanvalck.
