David Lynn McNabb passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, June 4, 2018.
He was born April 22, 1955 in Torrance, California, to Nadine and Gerald McNabb. David attended elementary school in the Torrance area and then, in 1962, the family moved to Atascadero, California, where David attended school and was a star baseball player.
Later, the family moved to Arroyo Grande, California, where he graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 1973. Shortly after graduating high school, David married his high school sweetheart, Melanie Bloom.
After turning 18, David immediately started working in the oilfields in the Santa Maria Valley. He worked for Jerry Nunn Construction, Van Construction, Engel & Gray Inc., etc. before starting his own oilfield construction company, David McNabb Construction, in 1978. At that time, David was the youngest general engineering contractor in California. In the mid-1970s, David was also part owner of a sandblasting business in Old Arroyo Grande for a short period of time with his lifelong friend, Jack Yant.
In the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, David worked primarily for Unocal at the Guadalupe, Orcutt Hill, Santa Maria Valley, Cat Canyon, Lompoc and Point Conception oilfields and Unocal Pipeline. He also worked for Shell Oil, Grace Petroleum, Chevron, Gato Corp., Pyramid Oil, etc. David’s more recent oilfield work was for Santa Maria Energy near Casmalia and the Careaga Lease near Orcutt. He also worked for Chevron at Guadalupe Beach, Avila Beach, Tank Farm in San Luis Obispo, and did well abandonments in Chevron’s Santa Maria Valley oilfields.
David was a skilled outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He was an avid deer and pig hunter, and often went out of state to hunt mule deer and to go trout fishing. He made many fishing trips with friends to Baja California, Mexico. David also loved to cook and was known for his delicious Santa Maria-style barbecues.
In November 2014, David was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and received a bilateral lung transplant at UCLA Medical Center in April 2015. This transplant saved him and added three precious years to his life. However, in recent months he was having problems breathing and was diagnosed at UCLA with chronic rejection. This sadly took his life very quickly.
David was loved by practically everyone who knew him. He was a loving father and grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all. David enjoyed attending the New Beginnings Church in Santa Maria for the last four years with Pastor Larry Tajon.
David is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Melanie McNabb; his two sons, David and Brian; and two daughters, Nicole and Carolyn, all of Orcutt and Santa Maria. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Abel McNabb, Shelby McNabb, Hailee McNabb, Cadence Brown and Mason Brown; his sister, Sandy (Danny) Tribble of Shawnee, Kansas; and his brothers, Jerry (Tami) McNabb of Lincoln City, Oregon, and Mike McNabb of Santa Maria. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, Renee (Steve) Enos, Joshua Tribble, Sheila (Earl) Adels, Michelle (Nate) Basey, Chris (Carly) McNabb, Matthew McNabb, Riley McNabb and sister-in-law Sharon (Steve) Arnold and too many others to mention.
David was preceded in death by both of his parents, Nadine and Gerald McNabb; his grandparents, Edith and Virgil McNabb, and Jessie and Country Cook; numerous aunts and uncles; and in-laws Nettie and Wayne Libby and Lenore and Mick Bloom, and sister-in-law Carol Brookshier.
