Carpinteria’s Ulises Segura scored a game-tying goal on a well-struck free kick in the 60th minute, but Channel Islands responded 10 minutes later and beat the Warriors, 2-1, in a Citrus Coast League game in Oxnard on Wednesday.

“We kept pushing and didn’t let up and had a big opportunity to score in the 75th min but hit the side netting,” said Carpinteria coach Gerardo Rodriguez. “We played well and I was proud of the boys for the way they played and fought the whole game. Sadly, we didn’t get the result we wanted.”

Girls Soccer

Channel Islands 2, Carpinteria 1

Isela Zamora gave Carpinteria a 1-0 lead on header in the 30th minute, but Channel Islands came back with two goals and beat the Warriors, 2-1, in a Citrus Coast League girls soccer game on Wednesday.

Zamora, who returned to the lineup after suffering an injury in December, finished a free kick from Sophia Mora.

Channel Islands scored the equalizer in the 38th minute and the game-winner in the 55th minute.

“We created many counter-attack opportunities,” said coach Freddy Martinez. “Ashley Verduzco, Averi Alexander and Evelyn Lara would combine and collect long passes and put Channel Islands on their heels and give us hope for an equalizer in the later parts of the match. Unfortunately, it was not able to happen today.”

Martinez praised the defense of Arianna Lounsbury and Lela Roberts on the back line.

“The blood and sweat all the girls shed on the field today is something that our parents and fans should be very proud of. I know I am,” said Martinez.

The Warriors are now 6-6-1 overall and 4-3 in league.
