Junior guard Matthew Cunningham scored a game-high 24 points on Wednesday night and Bishop Diego benefitted from strong defense in the third quarter of a 51-39 boys basketball win at Santa Paula.

“It wasn’t our best game in terms of energy and offensive production but the good thing is we hung in there and got stops when we needed them,” said coach James Coronado. “I thought Connor Streett brought a lot of energy on both sides of the court and that is what helped us pull away at the end.”

Street tallied 13 points for the Cardinals, who trailed 17-16 at the half and took a two-point lead (34-32) into the fourth period. Bishop won the final eight-minute session, 17-7.

The Cardinals will play again on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Malibu in the Thacher Tournament.
