The San Marcos defense held Grace Brethren scoreless through three quarters, and the Royals got goals from six players in a 9-3 non-league boys lacrosse win on Friday.
Captains Owen Williams and Jackson Kelly led the strong defensive performance, said coach Rick Lehman. Goalie Korey Becker made 10 saves in three quarters of action before being replaced by sophomore Cody Heinze.
Lehman praised the play of Luke Thacher. “He was a vacuum out there, getting six ground balls and locking it down defensively. He was awarded the game ball for his all-around ‘Energizer bunny’ effort,” said the coach.
Connor Early led the attack with three goals and seven ground balls. Tyler Hughes netted two goals, while Evan Lehman, Jack Van Thyme, Jack Weibe and Gage Heinze each scored one goal.
Coach Lehman said Caden Bryant “had the prettiest assist,” feeding Weibe with a beautiful quick-stick cross in the crease.
San Marcos returns to Channel League play this week, with matches against Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara. The Royals will be looking to extend their dominance as the city champion for the seventh year in a row.
