A man wanted on felony warrants surrendered Wednesday after a lengthy standoff with deputies in Santa Maria, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident on the 1100 block of East Sunset Avenue began at about 11:30 a.m., said Raquel Zick, sheriff’s public information officer.

The man, Victor Manuel Ayala Sanchez, 30, was refusing to exit the single-family home where he lives, Zick said.

Sheriff’s negotiators talked with Sanchez, trying to convince him to surrender.

The situation “has been and continues to be slow-moving,” Zick told Noozhawk.

Sanchez was taken into custody shortly after 3 p.m. after deputies entered the home and found him hiding in an attic area, Zick said.

Other people who were inside the house had been safely evacuated, she added.

Members of the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team and their armored vehicles were on scene, along with a K-9 officer. They were being assisted by a county helicopter.

The scene is near Tunnell Elementary School, but classes are not in session.

Sanchez was to be held without bail at the Northern Branch Jail for his outstanding felony warrants for charges including brandishing a firearm, robbery, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a gang enhancement, evading police, criminal threats, assault with a deadly weapon, and carjacking, Zick said.

He also faces additional misdemeanor charges.
