Santa Barbara is getting ready for a summer of puppy love.

There will be a furry frenzy at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse this summer as the theme for the free movie nights will be “the dog days of summer,” showing beloved movies featuring humanity’s best scruffy friend.

Every summer the UC Santa Barbara Arts and Lectures and the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture host free film screenings in the Sunken Garden at the courthouse, at 1100 Anacapa St.

The tradition began in 2010 and has become a beloved part of summers in Santa Barbara.

The film series will begin with “101 Dalmatians” on July 11 at 8:30 p.m.

The rest of the series will include “The Sandlot” which will play on July 18; “Best in Show” on July 25; “My Dog Skip” on Aug. 8; “Isle of Dogs” on Aug. 15; “Marley and Me” on Aug. 22; and will wrap up with “Dog” on Aug. 29.

There will be no screening on Aug. 1 due to Old Spanish Days Fiesta.

Filmgoers can start setting up blankets and chairs in the Sunken Garden at noon on the day of the screenings.

In order to not damage the lawn, attendees are asked to bring blankets, avoid plastic or nylon tarps, and use low-backed chairs that sit close to the ground.

Furry friends are invited to join if they are leashed, organizers said.
