A strong defensive effort led San Marcos flag football to a 27-0 win over Buena on Tuesday.
The first half was a quiet one thanks to a crucial interception by Royals defensive back Jordan Kowalewski to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
Along with Kowalewski, linebackers Molly McCarter and Marilyn Monroy made big stops while defending the run to maintain the shutout.
The San Marcos offense woke up early in the second half when quarterback Jazmyn Amezcua hit McCarter for a 60-yard touchdown catch to take the first lead of the night.
Rio Chesluk then continued her stellar defensive season with a 42-yard pick-six on Buena’s first possession of the second half. Following a two-point conversion connection from Peyton Sperling and Harlyn Griffin, the Royals were up 14-0.
After another defensive stop, Sperling added in a 7-yard rushing touchdown to expand the lead to 21-0 after Chesluk caught the one-point conversion.
On the final San Marcos possession of the night, Sperling threw for a touchdown, finding Eden Miranda in the back of the endzone to bring the score to 27-0.
Riley Cook added on one final interception late in the game to seal the shutout and clinch the victory.
The Royals (7-2, 3-1 Channel League) will hit the road to take on Ventura on Thursday.
