Dos Pueblos’ Luke Varesio hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run in a 2-1 non-league win over St. Joseph to secure a doubleheader sweep at home Saturday.
The Chargers won the first game 8-3. In that one, starter Lukas Ginder went five innings, allowing just one run. Zach Zbinden pitched the final two innings, striking out one batter.
Luke Varesio and Kevin Wirtz each had multi-hit games, with Wirtz adding two RBI. Chandler Shellabarger hit a single.
In the nail-biting second game, starter Sasha Holmes went five innings for Dos Pueblos, striking out five and not allowing an earned run. Kevin Wirtz pitched two innings of shut-out relief, striking out five.
Owen Simandle then pitched two innings of scoreless relief, striking out four to earn the win.
Zach Gesswein walked three times and scored a run, and Matteo Calene walked twice and scored the winning run on Varesio’s hit.
Jesse DiMaggio also had an RBI single for the Chargers’ other run.
Dos Pueblos is now 11-9 overall with the two wins, and remains 4-4 in Channel League play.
