Dos Pueblos pitcher Georgia Wilson turned in a solid performance, but the Chargers’ offense was held in check by Rio Mesa’s Nicolette Hunter in a 3-0 loss on Monday in a showdown of Channel League leaders.
It was the first loss in league play for DP (7-1, 13-6 overall). Rio Mesa improved to 8-0 and 19-1-1 overall.
Hunter, who’s committed to Harvard, fired a three-hitter and hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Rio Mesa scored a run in the first on a fielder’s choice.
The Chargers nearly tied the score in the third, but Bella Nuño’s rocket with a runner on base went right to the second baseman who turned it into a double play.
Wilson kept Rio Mesa at bay until Hunter went deep in the sixth.
“This was a great pitcher’s duel today,” said DP coach Mike Gerken. “Georgia Wilson did a masterful job of keeping them off balance. When they did get hits, our defense was able to come through.
“Our team was aggressive at the plate and created some scoring opportunities, but we didn’t get the timely hit. We had runners in scoring position in both the 6th and the 7th, but could not push one across.
Pau Avina and Trisho Lo had great at-bats today, getting on base twice to give the top of the order a chance to knock them in.”
The teams play again Wednesday at DP.
