The Dos Pueblos boys held host Ventura scoreless in overtime to pull out a 80-69 win after a nip-and-tuck regulation game Wednesday night in Channel League action.
“In the OT we played great defense, holding them scoreless, and were able to execute some plays for great looks,” Charger coach Joe Zamora said. “I was extremely proud of the way my guys played a smart game and never gave up.”
Senior Grant Hughes was a force on both ends, and was “extremely focused tonight,” Zamora said. Hughes scored 34 points, and Justin Stock added 22. Micah Goss and Matthew Zamora added eight apiece.
“Justin stock was the recipient of great assists for wide open looks,” Zamora said. “Micah Goss had numerous deflections and rebounds, while Joe and Matthew put guys in positions to score.
“It was a great way to finish the season.”
The Chargers had their work cut out coming in, facing a pumped up Senior Night Ventura team.
The Cougars led 36-30 at the half.
“We switched up the defenses a lot, but they still got looks,” Zamora said.
We played a tough second half and we were able to build a small lead.”
The game became a back-and-forth contest, and with the score tied at 69 with just under two seconds left, the Chargers got a look — but couldn’t convert.
With the win, Dos Pueblos finishes at 4-10 in league play and 9-19 overall.
