Dos Pueblos boys soccer swept its doubleheader on the first day of the Bearcat Showcase on Friday in Paso Robles.

The Chargers erupted for a 7-1 victory over Firebaugh before pulling out a penalty-kick shootout win over Santa Maria.

Dos Pueblos caught fire early in the first half of its first game, scoring three goals within five minutes to race out to a 3-0 lead by the 17th minute.

Owen Ribbens led the way with two of the three goals, while Atton Hayes scored the last off an assist from goalkeeper Kieran Buell.

Later in the opening half, Logan Stevens finished off an assist from Chris Barreto to give Dos Pueblos a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime.

The Chargers continued to roll out of the break, scoring three unanswered goals courtesy of Miles Smith, Keenan Bower and Aaron Renteria.

Firebaugh scored in the 57th minute to round out the scoring, bringing the game to its final score of 7-1.

“It was good to be able to get more offensive production from the team,” Dos Pueblos coach Oscar Garcia said. “The whole team defended well throughout the game, keeping a shutout throughout most of the game.”

In the second game of the day, the Chargers opened the scoring in the second minute on a goal by Stevens. However, Santa Maria immediately responded with a goal in the seventh minute to tie things up.

That score held for the rest of regulation as both defenses tightened up to send it to a penalty kick shootout.

Dos Pueblos nailed all five of its penalty shots as Stevens, Ribbens, Barreto, Andrew Gomez and Dylan Wooten all found the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Buell saved Santa Maria’s second penalty shot to secure the victory.

“Santa Maria was a very strong opponent; they made life really tough on us,” Garcia said. “It took a lot of patience for our team to stay in this game.

“Being the second game of the day, a couple of players went out with cramps and knocks, but many players stepped up to play various different roles, such as sophomore Miles Smith and Senior Toribio Lopez, who gave the team important minutes in roles they normally don’t fill.”

Dos Pueblos will now compete in the semifinal of the Gold Bracket of the Bearcat Showcase on Saturday at 11:15 a.m.

Newbury Park 1, Santa Barbara High 0

The Dons dropped a tight battle with Newbury Park on Friday night.

The lone goal of the match came in the fifth minute when Newbury Park finished off a 1-on-1 chance.

Santa Barbara High responded and controlled the tempo of the second half, but it didn’t translate to points as the same ended at 1-0 in favor of Newbury Park.

“Newbury Park really tested us physically tonight. We knew coming in it was going to be more of a physical match than a soccer match,” Santa Barbara High head coach Ricardo Alcaraz said.

“In the second half, I felt we controlled the tempo of the game, but we couldn’t create any real opportunities. Still, I’m proud of how our guys responded and matched the physical play of Newbury Park.”

The Dons will take on rival San Marcos on Tuesday at Warkentin Stadium.

Carpinteria High 1, Thacher 0

The Warriors pulled out a win over the Toads on Saturday afternoon.

Carpinteria broke the scoreless tie in the 15th minute when Gerardo Mejia beat the Thacher goalkeeper and found Rooney Torres for the open goal.

The Warriors controlled the pace of play and anchored down defensively en route to the win.

“It was a tight win as we could have put more of our chances away,” Carpinteria High coach Edgar Mendoza said. “Thatcher has really improved since the last time we played them and it was a nice test for both teams.

“As a team, we just need to have our mentality right and have everyone on the same page as we look to improve every day as much as we can. I want to praise Cesar Jaime, our center back, and Rooney Torres as they both stepped up to help the team with a clean sheet.”

The Warriors will host Agoura Hills on Monday at 4 p.m.
