Dos Pueblos boys water polo kicked off its CIF-SS Div. 1 playoff run with a 13-9 victory over San Clemente on Friday at the Elings Aquatic Center in Goleta.

The victory sets up a Channel League showdown in Round 2, as the Chargers will take on Buena next Thursday at 5 p.m. in Ventura.

The first quarter was a tightly contested one, as Dos Pueblos escaped with a slim 3-2 advantage.

However, the Charger offense woke up for five goals in the second quarter to pull away for an 8-4 lead at halftime.

From there, Dos Pueblos added on four goals in the third and held on in the fourth for the first-round victory.

It was a balanced attack for the Chargers, who had eight different players find the back of the net. Grant Nelson led the charge with four goals, while Lucas Neushul and Ben Fuhrer each scored twice.

Meanwhile, Channing Wigo, Tyler Racine, Eli Carnaghe, Aricin Marshall and Adam Gelman rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Wigo also added three assists, a steal and a field block.

Ty Abel had a strong defensive performance as well, while Koa Zertuche tallied seven saves and two assists in the cage.

Dos Pueblos improved its overall season record to 24-5 with the victory.
