Dos Pueblos boys wrestling earned a fourth-place finish out of the 26-team Battle for the Bay this weekend in Santa Monica.
Meanwhile, the Charger girls wrestling team competed in the Glendora Girls Thanksgiving Throwdown.
“The team wrestled very well today,” Dos Pueblos head coach Matt Bernard said. “The coaching staff and I are very happy with their progress. Tournaments like this allow the wrestlers to work out the kinks and execute new material they may have been working in the room.”
Boys
The duo of Brandon Velasquez and Ethan Ono led the charge for Dos Pueblos with first-place finishes in the 157-pound and 215-pound divisions, respectively.
They each went a perfect 4-0 on the tournament, with Ono earning all four wins with a pin and wrestling for just over four minutes across his four matches.
Meanwhile, Andrew Gilligan and Hector Medina-Lule each turned in second-place showings in the 132-pound and 285-pound divisions, respectively.
Seamus Fergus rounded out the Dos Pueblos podium finishers after going 4-1 and placing third in the 157-pound class.
Conner Leon (138 lbs.) Patrick Sullivan (144 lbs.), Anthony Garcia (175 lbs.) and Max Mazin (190 lbs.) each earned one win in their bracket to contribute to the team point total.
“Our veterans felt at home and controlled their respective brackets: four made the finals, while one wrestled back to the consolation finals,” Bernard said. “Almost every wrestler contributed to the fourth-place finish, with most picking up wins and advancing further in the tournament, thereby earning more team points.”
Girls
Despite not placing in the 105-pound division, Ariana Valladares led the Chargers with three wins at the Glendora Girls Thanksgiving Throwdown.
“It was a tough bracket, and she wrestled very well,” Bernard said. “Ariana is a consistent performer. She trains hard, follows her routine, and goes out there to win every time.
“She saw some tougher competition this weekend, which is great, because it will only help her in reaching her goals.”

Jennifer Salcadeo took fifth place in the 145-pound class after going 2-2, and Yaretzi Arredondo picked up one victory at 110 pounds.
“[Arredondo] continues to get better every time and is very exciting to watch,” Bernard said. “Jen has been putting in the time and the results are starting to show it. She keeps getting better with every match.”
