Dos Pueblos girls flag football battled to a second-place finish in the Los Angeles Chargers Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
The Chargers took down Western Christian, 20-6, and Classical Academy, 12-7, before falling to highly-ranked Orange Lutheran in a 23-21 overtime thriller of a championship game.
In the title matchup, Orange Lutheran struck first with a touchdown and a failed conversion attempt for a 6-0 lead. However, the Chargers then erupted for 20 unanswered points to race out to a 20-6 lead.
In the 20-point swing, Kacey Hurley tossed a trio of touchdown passes to Brooklyn Hedricks, Carly Letendre and Taylor Grant. Hendricks and Grant each hauled in successful point-after attempts.
The Lancers came roaring back in the second half to tie the game up at 20-20 and force overtime. In overtime, Hurley and Hedricks connected with a point-after conversion, but Orange Lutheran pulled out the victory with a pair of conversions.
Earlier in the day, the Chargers punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 20-6 victory over Western Christian.
In that win, Hurley connected for three more passing touchdowns, with two going to Kindah Ahmad-Reda and one to Hedricks. Ruby Streatfeild and Hurley each ran in point-after conversions. Defensively, Hedricks tallied an interception.
In the semifinals, Dos Pueblos pulled out a 12-7 win over Classical Academy in a defensive battle.
After falling behind 7-0, Hurley found Grant for a deep touchdown pass to cut the deficit down to 7-6 following a failed point-after attempt.
In the second half, Hurley and Hedricks connected once again for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown pitch and catch.
The Charger defense turned in a stellar performance to advance to the championship game as Hedricks pulled in an interception, while Xenia Potter, Lucia Riley and Tabby Waller all tallied sacks.
Dos Pueblos (6-1) will host St. Bonaventure for a non-league game on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
