The Dos Pueblos girls lost a Channel League decision at Buena Tuesday, 50-41, but coach Manny Murillo sees plenty of improvement in the team.

“I thank God for the opportunity to coach this team,” Murillo said. “They have improved a lot in the past few games. Credit to Buena and their players for competing and coming out on top. We’re in a very tough league, every possession matters. Getting stops matters, helping your teammates matters, making the extra pass matters!”

Justine Katz led the Chargers with 16 points, shooting 6-for-9 in field goals. Lauren Robles and Gianna Nichols scored eight points apiece.

Buena’s freshman star guard Karisma Lewis led all scorers with 29.

“Last game (against Buena, a 54-36 DP loss) our freshman Carly Letendre shut their best player and fellow freshman (Lewis) down, holding her to six points, and it was their role players that hurt us,” Murillo said.

“This time around their best scorer played very well and scored 60% of their points and nobody else scored in double digits.”

Dos Pueblos is now 5-8 in Channel League play and 10-16 overall. Buena improves to 9-4 in league.

On Thursday the Chargers will host Ventura for Senior Night. Ventura is the league-leader at 10-3.

“We have to take care of the ball and come out strong,” Murillo said.
