Carly Letendre and Justine Katz sparked a second-half surge by the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team in a 42-36 non-league win over defending CIF-SS Division 1 champion Viewpoint on Monday at Sovine Gym.
Letendre, a freshman, led the Chargers with 16 points. She grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals and didn’t commit a turnover.
Katz, a junior, had 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.
“Our energy on defense and shooting in the third quarter really got us going,” said coach Manny Murillo. “The third quarter was our best quarter by far defensively and offensively. Evette Allen’s energy on defense helped turn it around for us, and we moved the ball better on offense. Justine and Carly were more aggressive on offense.
“When those two are aggressive, we play really well as a unit.”
Gianna Nichols scored nine points, Sierra Jewell had seven rebounds and Allen and Savannah Riley each grabbed six boards.
Dos Pueblos improved to 5-3 season.
The Chargers are back on the court on Tuesday, playing Division 1 runner-up Camarillo in a first-round game in the Green Division of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. The game is at 2:30 p.m. at San Marcos.
“This was yet another good team win with everyone getting in the game and getting opportunities to score and get stops,” said Murillo. “I’m glad we ended up with the W, but we will need to play a lot better tomorrow. And I know we will. I believe in this group.”
