Linnea Clapinski netted a game-winning golden goal to power Dos Pueblos girls lacrosse to a 9-8 overtime victory over Cate in Thursday’s Channel League opener in Carpinteria.
Clapinski, a D’Youville University commit, dominated all night for the Chargers and ended with a game-high seven goals, including the 100th of her high school career.
In the overtime period, Clapinski won the draw and drew a foul on a drive on the opening possession. She then buried the 8-meter penalty shot to give Dos Pueblos the win.
“Our team played well and our defense played an exceptionally strong game against a talented and well-coached Cate team,” Dos Pueblos head coach Dan Feldhaus said.
“Linnea is a tough player to stop and she played through a ton of adversity today. I am very excited that she got her 100th goal today.”
It was a tight matchup throughout, as neither team led by more than one goal for the entire contest. In fact, the game was tied at the end of every quarter of regulation.
Dos Pueblos’ Elsa Terebessy and Natasha Huie scored late in the fourth quarter to take a one-goal lead with 29 seconds left on the clock.
However, Cate then called a timeout and scored the game-tying goal with four seconds remaining to send the game into overtime and set up Clapinski’s heroics.
The Chargers are now 3-1 overall and hold a 1-0 record against league opponents.
