Dos Pueblos sophomore Matti Di Maggio and the Team USA 15U National baseball team captured the gold medal at the World Baseball Softball Confederation World Cup Finals over the weekend.
Di Maggio and Team USA earned a 5-4 walk-off win over the Dominican Republic in extra innings in Sunday’s title game at Parque Kukulcán Alamo in Yucatán, Mexico.
The victory gave the USA 15U National Team its third World Cup championship and eighth-ever gold medal.
Di Maggio played a big role in Team USA’s championship-game win, including a rally-starting single and a run scored in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead
After some back-and-forth play down the stretch, USA’s Calvin Madenshpacher drove in Noah Osterman with a walk-off RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.
Di Maggio was a force throughout the tournament for Team USA, reaching base in all nine games played.
The Dos Pueblos standout is one of the top high school baseball players in the country and is currently ranked as the Perfect Game No. 3 player in the Class of 2029.
In his first year at the high school level last spring, Di Maggio was named the Channel League Most Valuable Player after a historic campaign. He hit a program-record 11 home runs and ended with a .508 batting average, 36 hits, 37 runs scored and 22 RBI in 31 games played.
Di Maggio will look to continue the standout start to his high school career when he begins his sophomore season with the Chargers in February.
