Dos Pueblos softball fell to Newbury Park by a score of 1-0 in their season opener on Tuesday at home.
Charger starting pitcher Georgia Wilson went toe to toe with Newbury Park’s Taylor Cook, as both pitchers dominated in their own ways.
While Wilson induced plenty of ground balls and escaped multiple jams, Cook dominated with 15 strikeouts while holding Dos Pueblos to three hits.
The lone run of the matchup came in the sixth inning thanks to a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an error from the Charger defense.
Dos Pueblos threatened to answer back in the bottom of the sixth, getting two runners on base. However, Cook escaped the jam and shut the door in the seventh inning for the win.
“This really was a great way to start the softball season, with a well-pitched game by two top quality pitchers,” Chargers coach Mike Gerken said. “Georgia is a master of pitching to soft contact and giving our infielders easy chances. She only gave up two hard hit balls all game.
“Our defense was solid with the exception of some minor errors that I’ll chalk up to first-game jitters.”
Anastasia Brunner had a solid day at the plate for Dos Pueblos (0-1), including knocking a double. Rylee Cathcart also turned in a 1-for-3 performance.
“I’m proud of the way we competed today, especially our girls who are new to varsity softball,” Gerken said.
Viewpoint 3, Bishop Diego 2
The Cardinals fell in a pitchers’ duel of their own against Viewpoint on Tuesday.
All three of Viewpoint’s runs came in the fourth inning courtesy of a bases-clearing double off the bat of Autumn Kreshek.
Meanwhile, both of the Bishop Diego runs were scored in the top of the sixth inning by Tara Gregson and Audrey Gayou.
In the circle, Madeline Ferries recorded 12 outs for the Cardinals while Emay Peck earned the win for Viewpoint.
Bishop Diego will host Orcutt Academy on Wednesday.
