A four-run fourth inning propelled Dos Pueblos softball to a 6-2 non-league win over Burroughs on Saturday in Goleta.
“This was a complete team win today,” Dos Pueblos head coach Mike Gerken said. “The pitching and defense were superb, and we got timely hits up and down the lineup.
“This was a good tune-up for the big games we have ahead of us against Rio Mesa and Oxnard. We are in a good spot right now.”
Zella Cassidy opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second, Burroughs took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. However, Emily Morici then came through with an RBI single in the bottom half to score Cassidy and even the game at 2-2.
Dos Pueblos then pulled ahead in the fourth with run-scoring hits from Anastasia Brunner, Brooklyn Hedricks and Cassidy, and an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Kacey Hurley.
Morici finished off her complete game from there to secure the win for the Chargers. She ended the day with two earned runs on four hits and 10 strikeouts to pick up the victory.
Cassidy led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Brunner and Morici tallied two hits apiece.
“Zella was seeing the ball very well and hit the ball harder today than I’ve ever seen her hit it,” Gerken said. “She hit two doubles off the wall, and her single was too scary for the fielder to even try to make a play.”
