Dos Pueblos boys wrestling took down Rio Mesa while the shorthanded girls squad dropped their matchup on Wednesday.

Boys

On the boys side, the Chargers pulled out a tight 38-36 victory.

Dos Pueblos’ victories came from Francisco Espinosa (113), Shaun Vague (132), Seamus Fergus (138), Ryan Risdall (144), Brandon Velasquez (157), Sylis Penniman (175) and Ethan Ono (215).

Ono, a freshman, had an impressive win over a seasoned opponent. Meanwhile, Fergus has shown continuous improvement throughout the season, according to head coach Matt Bernard.

“We have a very young boys team with five sophomores and three freshmen in the lineup, but they are hungry,” Bernard said. “The whole team comes to practice each day, ready to learn, ready to work hard, and it shows when they step out on the competition mat.

“They continue to make huge strides toward their goals and toward the team’s goals.”

Girls

For the girls, Dos Pueblos had just four available wrestlers, resulting in a 54-6 loss to the Spartans.

Alyssa Warner (115) picked up the lone win for the Chargers and, according to Bernard, “continues to lead both on and off the mat.”

“The team performed great, across the board,” Bernard said. “Every single one of them, boys and girls, went out there to give it their all.”
