
Former Dos Pueblos baseball standout Gabe Speier has been called up to the Kansas City Royals, the team announced.
Speier, a 2013 DP graduate, is a 24-year-old left-handed pitcher who the Royals acquired in 2018 from the Arizona Diamondbacks along with pitcher Elvis Luciano for outfielder Jon Jay.
Speier, the Channel League MVP in 2013, was drafted out of high school by the Boston Red Sox in the 19th round of the June Amateur Draft. He also spent time in the Detroit Tigers organization.
He’ll join Cabrillo High alum Danny Duffy on the Royals’ staff.
Speier becomes the second DP Charger in the Major Leagues. James McCann, a 2008 alum, is the starting catcher for the Chicago White Sox.
This year, Speier pitched well for Double-A Northwest Arkansas, posting a 2.42 ERA in 22.1 innings, with 28 strikeouts.
He was promoted to Triple-A Omaha of the offense-friendly Pacific Coast League, where is ERA rose to 5.63 in 40 innings. He struck out 45.
