The Dos Pueblos girls lost an extra round of tiebreakers to Valencia High School in Placentia Thursday, ending their season in the CIF-SS D2 playoffs.

Set play between the two schools ended at 9-9, after the Chargers’ No. 3 singles player Saned Crespo beat the Tigers’ No. 2 player in the last set, 6-3, to complete a third-round Dos Pueblos comeback.

Incredibly, the total games won by both schools — normally the tiebreaker factor — added up to 71 apiece.

That sent the teams to a “super tiebreak,” in which the first-round matchups of singles and doubles returned to the courts, and each played a tiebreaker.

The Tigers prevailed, 4-2.

“It was a pretty crushing way to lose, but I’m proud of our grit and resilience in being able to come from behind so late in the match, against a team who had won their (Empire) league championship,” Dos Pueblos coach Rob Schiff said.

Going into the third round of regulation set play, the Chargers were down 5-7 and managed to win four of the six sets to even the score.

Dos Pueblos ends the season at 11-5, after going 10-4 in Channel League play.

“Hopefully we’ll work hard in the off season and be ready to go next August, when next season begins!” Schiff said.
