The Dos Pueblos girls golf team completed a 10-0 Channel League season by defeating Santa Ynez, 255-269, at the Alisal Ranch Course in Solvang on Monday.
The player scores were from the first nine holes of the 36-hole league individual championships.
Chargers Victoria Chen and Sagarika Manian each shot 46 to share medalist honors and Chelsi Ramirez was one stroke back at 47. Mackenzie Phelan led Santa Ynez with 49.
“It was a strange way to end our team league competitions with scores from the front nine of our individual finals determining our last head-to-head competition, but in some ways it also seemed very fitting,” said DP coach Dan Choi. “Santa Ynez had to move their match the first time around to the Ranch course, giving up their competitive home advantage, so it seemed somewhat fitting that when we had to cancel due to complications with the Alisal Fire that we did the same.”
Choi was pleased at how his players came through in tough conditions.
“Chelsi, Saga and Victoria played really well at a hard course and in tough conditions,” he said. “I am also so happy for Camille (Robinson). She is one of the hardest working members on our team and for that reason we are always rooting for her to get her just rewards. I know that Shira (Brody)and Brynlee (Grose) would have also preferred to have scored better but their scores were just as important for the win as all the others.”
Choi was impressed how his players stepped up during a tough season to finish undefeated.
“When you look back on an undefeated season it may seem like everything just went our way,” he said. “But on the contrary, there were a lot of challenges and struggles along the way, and I could not be more proud of the whole team and the way they always kept rolling with the punches and giving their best.”
Dos Pueblos finishes the regular season at 12-0 and will represent the Channel League at the CIF-SS Divisional Team Championships.
Santa Ynez finished in a three-way tie for second place with Santa Barbara and San Marcos at 6-4. The scores on the front nine acted as a league playoff and Santa Ynez came in second, Santa Barbara third and San Marcos fourth.
As a league runner-up, Santa Ynez plans to petition for a CIF at-large berth, said Athletic Director Ashley Coelho.
