Michael Gentry of Dos Pueblos qualified for the Southern California Golf Association Championships by finishing among the top 28 individual golfers at Thursday’s CIF-SS Boys Individual Finals and SCGA Team Qualifying Tournament at the River Ridge Victoria Course in Oxnard.

Gentry shot a 4-over par 76 to qualify with the 28 individuals not on a qualifying team. He had four birdies in his round.

“I am very impressed by Michael’s performance under pressure and people watching,” said DP coach Kevin Ahlers. “The wind was picking up on their back nine, and Michael and Ruben Mendoza were both were able to use it to their advantage.

“I’m so excited for Michael to be moving on.”

Gentry will play in the SCGA Tournament on June 15 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

Mendoza shot a 78, and the cutoff to qualify was 77.

Mendoza was the first player to tee off Thursday morning.

“I have to commend Ruben with is first tee shot,” said Ahlers. “He was the first to tee off in front of a very large crowd and he hit it long and right down the middle.”

As the first golfers to tee off, Ahlers said they had to wait all day to see if they advanced.

Santa Barbara High’s Hudson Hattan shot an 82.

Kamron Hopson of Redlands took first place with a 2-under 70. He won in a card-off with Luke Powell of Capo Valley Christian and Greyson Leach of Peninsula.
