Victoria Chen led a balanced Dos Pueblos scorecard in a 241-285 girls golf victory over San Marcos in the Channel League opener at Sandpiper Golf Course on Tuesday.

Chen shot a 8-over par 44 to earn medalist honors in the nine-hole match. Chelsi Ramirez was one stroke back, Sagarika Manian fired a 48, Camille Robinson carded a 51 and Vicky Tang and Marisa Ortiz shot 53 and 56 respectively.

Fia Torrey shot a 50 to lead San Marcos. The Royals’ other scores were: Riley O’Brien 55, Evelina Erickson 57, Sadi Adams 60 and Stella Ashamalla 63

“We really tried to do our homework about the course and I think it paid off for us in the end,” said DP coach Dan Choi. “I was very proud of the girls in general as a lot of them didn’t necessarily feel completely ready with it being an early season match, but they played smart and ended up scoring fairly well.

“Victoria in particular said that she was struggling to hit her hybrid and readjusted her whole game plan on the fly to set herself up to use other clubs. I told her scrambling like that is the true mark of a really good competitive golfer.”

Dos Pueblos improved to 3-0.

“DP is a very well-rounded and talented team,” said San Marcos coach Sarah Ashton. “Coach Choi has done a great job with this group of ladies and their play today was impressive.

“Unfortunately, we struggled overall, but we are young, and we will bounce back. I was very impressed with Fia Torrey today. She was level-headed, showed great sportsmanship, and had solid, consistent play. We rely on her maturity to keep us focused and looking forward.”

San Marcos is 3-3 overall.
