A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly striking a pedestrian with his vehicle and leading police on a pursuit through the streets of Santa Barbara.

The incident began at about 12:25 p.m., when officers responded to a disturbance on the 1900 block of De La Vina Street, according to Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale of the Santa Barbara Police Department.

“The reporting party called police dispatch to report a subject was pounding on the windows and attempting to enter a locked door of a local business,” Ragsdale said.  “Officers arrived and contacted the subject without incident. The subject was asked to leave the property and they complied.”

As the man was departing the area in his vehicle, he struck a retaining wall, Ragsdale said.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on the 2000 block of Bath Street, Ragsdale said, a good Samaritan attempted to prevent the vehicle from leaving by standing in front of it.

“The driver struck the good Samaritan, fled the scene, and a pursuit was initiated,” Ragsdale said.

Officers rendered life-saving measures and medical aid to the injured man until city Fire Department personnel and AMR paramedics arrived.

After a vehicle pursuit of the vehicle driver that led up onto the Mesa, the suspect was taken into custody on the 2300 block of Carlton Way at 1:36 p.m., Ragsdale said.

The suspect’s name and details on the arrest allegations he is facing were not immediately available.
