A rollover crash in downtown Santa Barbara on Monday evening led to the arrest of the driver on felony charges, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

The incident occurred on the 1700 block of Chapala Street at about 6:15 p.m., Lt. Ethan Ragsdale said.

“Officers arrived on scene and located the driver and a young child in a car seat,” Ragsdale said. “Santa Barbara Fire Department assisted in getting the driver and child safely out of the vehicle, and paramedics treated them.”

The two were taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for evaluation.

Details on their conditions were not available.

Investigators determined that the SUV struck two parked vehicles on the west side of the street before rolling onto its side, Ragsdale said.

A subsequent investigation found that the driver — identified as Ashley Marie Benson, 40, of Santa Barbara — was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, Ragsdale said.

She was taken to the Santa Barbara County Jail and booked on suspicion of DUI and child endangerment, Ragsdale said.

Her bail was set at $100,000.
