The driver who died after a crash on Highway 101 on Friday has been identified as 35-year-old Melisa Reyes of Santa Maria.

Reyes was driving a 2009 Audi and for unknown reasons, the vehicle swerved and hit the concrete center median just after noon on Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol. She was driving southbound on the highway near Stowell Road at the time of the collision.

Emergency personnel transported Reyes to Marian Medical Center, where she died from her injuries, the CHP said Monday.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.

Lt. Joseph Rodriguez, commander of the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Maria office, reminded residents to be cautious when driving and to watch out for erratic drivers.

“Following Friday’s tragic fatal crash, we are asking our community to help us keep our roads safer for everyone. When motorists share what they see, whether it’s unusual movements, erratic actions, or anything that simply feels concerning, it gives us a chance to respond and take action,” Rodriguez said.

“Please stay alert, look out for one another, and contact CHP if something on the roadway doesn’t seem right. Together, we can help prevent future tragedies.”
