A man died Tuesday afternoon while surfing off Rincon Point in Carpinteria, and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau is investigating the death.
An AMR ambulance crew and Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District firefighters responded to reports of “an unconscious person” shortly after 2 p.m., fire Battalion Chief Mike Gallagher told Noozhawk.
“We were updated that he was being pulled from the water, and then soon after CPR had been initiated by bystanders on the beach,” Gallagher said. “He was surfing at the time, and noticed by other surfers who paddled over and pulled him in.”
Emergency personnel attempted to revive the man, but was declared dead at the scene.
Members of the Ventura County Fire Department also assisted on the incident.
The victim was identified as Lauren Campbell, 38, of Carpinteria, Raquel Zick, a spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, Zick said on Wednesday.
“It doesn’t appear suspicious,” Zick added, noting that the cause of death remained under investigation.
