Bishop Diego’s Eddie Perez scored 18 points in a hard-fought, come-from-behind home win over Thacher in a Tri-Valley League contest Friday, 67-64.

The Cardinals were down by double-digits for much of the first half, before clawing to within 28-24 at halftime. The second half was a back-and-forth contest.

“I told our guys we couldn’t have played a worse half,” said Bishop Diego coach James Coronado, “and the fact that we kept it close, if we banded together we had a good chance to come back. All the credit goes to those guys though, they came out swinging and got their crowd going.”

Damien Krautmann added 12 points for Bishop Diego.

Senior Rob Carney led the Toads with 27 — including eight 3-point shots.

“We couldn’t rotate to five (Carney) enough, and every time he had space, he was knocking it down,” Coronado said. “But we never panicked, and we got some key shots down the stretch, and some key stops, and that was the difference.”

Coronado gave “big props” to junior Perez and freshman Krautmann for keeping the game close.

“Two guys that don’t play that much and they were ready to go, a very difficult thing to do, especially this late in the season,” Coronado said.

Bishop Diego improves to 4-1 in TVL play and 14-8 overall.
