Southern California Edison will be using a helicopter on Friday to install five new utility poles in the Riviera neighborhood in Santa Barbara.

The project will result in planned power outages for 21 customers, while residents at 61 addresses have been asked to temporarily evacuate for safety reasons, according to Bryan Latchford, a spokesman for the city of Santa Barbara.

The project involves locations both north and south of Alameda Padre Serra, between Las Alturas and Garcia roads.

Surrounding neighbors are advised they may experience increased noise, and will see a low-flying helicopter in the area during project work hours — from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be full road closures on Roble Lane and De La Guerra Terrace.

There also will be intermittent traffic control on De La Guerra Road from Alameda Padre Serra to East De La Guerra Street, and on Alameda Padre Serra.

In addition to the helicopters, Edison crews and contractors will be working in the area.
